Brian Wilde, aka Corporal Foggy Dewhurst, died yesterday.
In ‘The Last of the Summer Wine’, he portrayed magnificently the character known in real life, as Dickiebo. Honest! The crap that he came out with about creeping up on Japanese soldiers and garrotting them; treading so lightly in the jungle that natives referred to him as ‘he who glides’; being an expert in man-management due to his N.C.O. training; being invited to return to the jungle after the war, to lead the tribe of Natives; etc., etc. And what did he actually do during the war? He was a Corporal alright; a Corporal sign-writer!
